I am using this NeutralHydrogenAbundance field to estimate the HI mass, but I would like to understand how this field is computed in the simulation. I checked the User guides from GADGET and AREPO but could not find references for this field.
Is there any other reference where I could see how this abundance is calculated?

This is described in Section 2.4.1 of Vogelsberger+2013.
In particular, the neutral hydrogen fraction is computed using the described model for self-shielding from the UVB.
