GFM_Metals field for subhalos/ alternatives

Hello, Im trying to access the total hydrogen fraction of the gas through the GFM_Metals field. I'm also using a SubLinkTree to trace the same galaxy across different snapshots. I notice the field is available for snapshot99 (z=0) , but then not available for most of the snapshots of that galaxy . I get the error 'Particle type [0] does not have field [GFM_Metals]'

But another interesting thing i notice is that if i replace the subID for another galaxy for that snapshot, it usually does have this field. So maybe its more common to have this field than not.

I'm wondering why that happens in the simulation, like when it includes this field and when it does not.

And most importantly is there another way i can get the total hydrogen fraction when this field is unavailable, maybe from 'GFM_Metallicity' somehow ?

Any help on the matter will be much appreciated.

Why do you need this? The value will never vary from 0.75 by any appreciable amount - I can't think of a calculation which requires it much more accurately than this.

The GFM_Metals dataset is only available in "full" snapshots, not in "mini" snapshots (as described in the data documentation). This sounds like what you are seeing in the trees.

I see. Thanks alot. Sorry for the confusion and to bother you with this. I wasn't clear on my science.
